What are the tax benefits of making a gift to Trinity?

All gifts to Trinity are tax deductible in the United States. There may also be tax benefits for residents of other countries. Bequests and life income gifts may offer significant tax savings. See Ways to Give for more information.

Will my company match my gift to Trinity?

To find out if your company offers a gift-matching program, consult the online database of matching companies or check the list of companies when you make a gift online. You can also ask your human resources department about your company's policy.

Why are unrestricted gifts so important?

Unrestricted gifts can be used wherever needs are greatest, allowing the University the flexibility to address its most pressing needs.

Can I donate in honor of a family member or friend?

Endowments and scholarships are often named in honor of a family member or friend. Also, naming opportunities for classrooms, gathering spaces, laboratories and buildings are available for donors who wish to honor or memorialize their loved ones in this manner.

Can I give an anonymous gift?

Yes, donors often choose to remain anonymous. The University always respects a donor's stated wish for privacy.

Can my gift support multiple areas of the University?

Gifts to benefit multiple areas within the University can be handled easily. Please discuss your needs with one of our development professionals or contact the development office at 210-999-8038.

What is the difference between endowed and expendable gifts? How does Trinity’s endowment work?

Expendable gifts are used in their entirety during a specific period of time. Gifts to annual funds, for example, are expendable. Some larger expendable gifts are used over longer periods.

Endowment refers to funds meant to exist in perpetuity, such as a scholarship or professorship. These gifts are invested for the long term and intended to provide a permanent source of financial support for the University. Each year, a portion of the fund is paid out—usually about 4.5 percent—and used for the purposes the donor and the University agreed upon when the gift was made.

What are the benefits of giving securities?

If you have securities that have appreciated in value, giving them to Trinity allows you to avoid capital gains taxes while also receiving a tax deduction for your gift. You may wish to discuss the tax benefits of your gift with your accountant or attorney. For questions on giving securities to Trinity, please call 210-999-8038.
